Fitness for PD is the next best thing to having a membership in a specialized gym for people with Parkinson’s.
Twice a week BPGers work out together in a caring, supportive environment and have fun as they rotate through aerobics session boxing practice and weight training on machines. Volunteer health sciences students from Long Island University assist participants and track vital signs and progress.
All exercises, gym equipment and weight machines are calibrated appropriately so that each participant does a vigorous workout just right for them, without over reaching. A professor of exercise science, physical therapy or nursing supervises all classes. Professional fitness and weight trainers lead the class.
Fitness for PD is collaboration between BPG and Long Island University physical therapy and sports sciences departments.
