Parkinson’s Center

Karen Bitner, a student of the Fashion Institute of Technology, has envisioned an eight story facility, housing medical, surgical, psychological, outpatient and educational services including a common area, cafe, support group rooms, library and dance and exercise studio. A glass enclosed atrium running from the ground to the top floor acts as the visible the “spine” of the structure and a water wall provides healing sound. The floors have specially treated surfaces to prevent slipping. Electronic diodes on railings give information. The library has an interactive “brain map”, and the color red is used throughout the dance studio based on research showing that it motivates movement. The thesis judges praised her innovative ideas, and although it is still on the drawing board, it gives PD patients hope that Karen is conceiving such intelligent design.
