Philip Hamilton Bio

Philip Hamilton is a Bessie award winning vocalist/composer with over 25 years of experience as a teacher and touring jazz musician. He has performed with a wide array of artists, including John Cage, the Pat Metheny Group, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ballet Hispanico.

He has extensive experience giving vocal workshops worldwide and has been leading sessions through the Meet the Artist Series at Lincoln Center for over 10 years.  He also teaches his unique vocal style regularly at New York University’s Cap21 program as well as Middlebury College in Vermont, where he is an Alexander Twilight Fellow. He has also conducted workshops at the Vermont Acappella Festival, Boston’s Emerson Center for the Arts, Dance Theater Workshop, the JuJaab Festival in Estonia, Kaunas Jazz Festival in Lithuania and the legendary CAPA school, Philadelphia High School for the Creative & Performing Arts in Philadelphia, among others.

Most recently, Hamilton has developed a music program for the Lefferts Garden Charter school in Brooklyn. This is a multi-tiered approach to music, which includes theory, musical biographies, introduction to instruments, listening and rhythm. This program has garnered a lot of support and praise in the educational system and is slated to expand to other Brooklyn schools in 2013-2014.
